Shutoff windows update, at least temporarily. I know
someone who pulled into NZ, hooked up to the internet and went about
checking their emails, happy to be "connected" again. In the background
Windows Update downloaded 400MB of data at a very expensive rate (in many
cafés you pay by the MB). The first
thing you need to do when you reconnect is to update your Anti-Virus
software. Guaranteed, while you were off gallivanting around, some devious
minds came up with 100's of ways to bring your computer to its knees. We
use AVG and find it in most internet cafes. After years of living behind the
protection of my company's firewall, I learned VERY quickly about the
dangers of the internet. I first connected my computer in a cafe without
ANY virus protection; it was very quickly attacked and ruined!! Doooughhh!
