Watches at Sea

  • Keep a bag for things you use during typical watches:

    • Headlamp (both white and red lights)
    • Harnesses
    • Reading lamps (red LED lights)
      The LightWedge NightVision reading light seems like a great idea, and you can use it on your charts.
    • Good count down timer - Make sure it has a memory feature that DOESN'T require it to go off before resetting. We finally found what we were looking for after many water logged kitchen timers. It has a clock, multiple alarms and the count down timer. It even has a light and is water resistant. We use it during the day if it looks like one or both of us is about to nod off. 15 minutes has worked good for us and sometimes we stretch it to 30 if we are in remote areas (where it's rare to see a freighter).


  • Water bottles – have a way to monitor water usage on an individual basis throughout the day. I’ve had two kidney stones and have seen more than one person have to fly away from the boat to get it taken care of. We use 1.8 L Ultimate Sport flasks for each of us.
