Shade-Ventilation and Screens

  • Fans, Fans, and more fans. We have one Hella Turbo fan which is attached to a 12 volt cigarette adapter. I drilled an additional hole in the base (next to the mounting hole) for another small bolt which I can bolt through a plastic rail clamp and a small section of batten which fits in the opening ports. We can then move our best fan where it is needed most. We also have the Hella/West Marine Jet Fans that pivot, one in the galley to suck or blow air in/out of the galley, one at the nav station, and one in each aft cabin. Try to take advantage of the pivoting nature to determine the optimal mounting position, in the aft cabin ours can pull air from the main saloon (where the main hatches are), or it can suck/blow air in/out of the small over head hatch in the cabin. We also use regular 12 volt computer fans mounted with angle aluminum at the foot of each bed (to draw air out of the dead spots and keep it circulating).

  • DSCF4443.jpg (47304 bytes)Rain covers for hatches - you need a squall proof method of allowing air flow while keeping water out. I use 80% shade fabric, tied at a slight angle, to keep the water from bouncing off the deck and being blown back up into the hatch.

  • Lightweight companion way hatch insert (vent & theft protection). We upgraded ours in Australia by using the bottom hatch board and adding a security screen (like on windows/doors) shaped like the top hatch board.

  • Screen Material – bring lots to make your own screens as you need them

  • Citronella Tee Lamps - Anti Mossy fans (little battery operated fans made in New Zealand by Raid)

  • Personal cooling - You can get personal misters that lower the air temperature 30 degrees, you can even build a system into your cockpit. I know the neck coolers look strange but they make a huge difference, we even spray ourselves with a hand sprayer when it gets ridiculously hot.
